A: Manuscripts published in JNRLSE must be original reports. They may not have been published previously or simultaneously submitted to another scientific or technical journal. The journal accepts reports of original studies pertaining to concepts of K-12, resident, undergraduate, graduate, extension, and industrial education. Reviews or digests of a comprehensive and well-defined scope are acceptable.

Q: Who publishes JNRLSE and who are the cooperators in publishing it?
A: JNRLSE was established by the American Society of Agronomy in 1972. Cooperators to the journal include Agricultural & Applied Economics Association, American Association for Agricultural Education, American Institute of Biological Sciences, American Society of Plant Biologists, American Phytopathological Society, American Society for Horticultural Science, Ecological Society of America, Crop Science Society of America, Entomological Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America.

Q: How do I submit an article to JNRLSE?
A: Submit your manuscript electronically via our online submission and review system, Manuscript Tracker. To submit a manuscript electronically you need to convert your files to PDF format (.pdf extension). It is best to use Acrobat Distiller and to include fonts when making the PDF file although other options may work. I suggest you check that everything displays properly before uploading the PDF file. It is also important that the style of the paper is proper for the journal (i.e., double spaced lines, all lines of type numbered, SI units used throughout, and references properly prepared). Consult the Instructions to Authors and the Style Manual.

Q: How long does it take JNRLSE to review a manuscript and make a decision regarding publication?
A: The average time from submission to first review is averaging about 33 days. Days from submission to final decision is averaging about 90 days.

Q: If my article is accepted in JNRLSE, are there any page charges or publication fees?
A: Authors pay a flat publication fee of $350 per article; $150 per web lesson. Authors will also be charged $10 per table and $10 per figure. Open access optional fee: An author has the option of paying an additional $800 fee, above the usual publication fee, to make the article open access (freely available without subscription) at the time of publication on the website.

Q: Does JNRLSE publish color figures?
A: If authors have color figures or illustrations to publish in the printed journal, the extra cost to the author is $100 per page of color. There is no extra charge for color figures on the website.

Q: After my article is published will I receive reprints?
A: Authors may order reprints of their articles, if they wish, at a modest price (for example, the price is $50 for 100 four-page reprints).

Q: How do I subscribe to JNRLSE? How much does it cost?
A: You can subscribe by sending an email to journals@sciencesocieties.org. The cost is based on membership to ASA, CSSA, SSSA, or any of the cooperating societies. 2010 prices are Member: $35 per year (USA), $50 (non-US); Nonmembers $105.00 per year within the USA; elsewhere $120.00. Back issues, $90 USA, elsewhere 105.00.

Q: How many issues of JNRLSE are published each year?
A: The journal is published online continuously. This means that articles are posted online as they are accepted and processed. Each December we publish one print volume. Subscribers have access to the electronic version throughout the year, and may choose the print or CD version with their online subscription. Subscribers may receive a third version for an additional $10.

Q: What is the email alert for JNRLSE and how does it work?
A: You can sign up for email alerts on the home page of JNRLSE. After you sign up, you will receive an email when new articles are posted to the JNRLSE website. These emails will contain the Title, Author(s), a brief description of the article, and a link to the article online.

Q: I want to use a figure from JNRLSE in another publication I am involved with. How do I obtain permission to do this?
A: If you are seeking permission to reprint a portion of any ASA-CSSA-SSSA journal article (text, table, figure), send an email to the Managing Editor (sernst@sciencesocieties.org), with a clear description of where the material was published (journal title, page numbers) and how and where you intend to use it; she will get back to you regarding permission.

Q: May I use part of an article (text or table/figure) published from another source in an article submitted to JNRLSE?
A: Yes. However, it is the author's responsibility to obtain permission or a release from the publisher of the material. The source of the material should also be acknowledged in the article. It is also the author's responsibility to pay any charges made by the publisher of the material.

Q: May I post an article submitted to JNRLSE on a website prior to publication?
A: Posting of articles which are submitted to any Society publication on websites before acceptance and publication may be considered prior publication. Authors should refrain from posting their articles until they have been published. Authors may give the article title and abstract with a link to the journal home page. It is against copyright laws to post the entire article on another website.
